National Day is the day that Singaporeans celebrate their independence from Malaysia. Ana Sia ’s “National Night”, on the other hand, celebrates the sexier, unwritten side of Singapore’s Independence Day. The side that encourages lovers to dance until the sun goes down, and make love until it comes up.
Rarely does a techno track hold that much narrative. But for Ana, the story of “National Night” comes from her Chinese roots by way of Malaysia, married with her recent sonic obsession with the grittier possibilities of house and techno.
She’s no newbie to the world of club music, in all of its iterations. But this mainstay of the LA nightlife world is more often associated with her bouncier West Coast club tunes that include nods to hip hop with a flip of a Rick Ross sample in “Imma Boss.” Or the groovy, tropical bass elements of her 2013 release “Executive Realness.”
With “National Night”, however, Ana offers up a side of her artistry that we have yet to hear. By replacing bouncy with punchy, and rap samples with dark synths, the title track takes you on a ride through the underground where pummeling techno equals sex appeal. And with “Yen,” a softer compliment to the title track which feels like the come down after the party, when the sun is coming up and lovers are taking the dance from the beach to the bedroom.
Ana Sia’s “National Night” and “Yen” scores a 24-hour celebration of independence - musical, cultural, and sexual. But these are also the sounds of an artist carving her own path.
